Recognizing the Signs & Knowing the Hotlines
Introduction
September is Suicide Awareness Month, and here in Tennessee the need for greater awareness and prevention is urgent. Suicide awareness in Tennessee means understanding the warning signs, knowing where to turn for crisis help, and sharing life-saving resources like the 988 hotline and the Tennessee Statewide Crisis Line..
Why it Matters
- In 2023, Tennessee recorded 1,279 deaths by suicide (CDC; Axios Nashville).
- Tennessee has expanded crisis services statewide: mobile crisis units, walk-in centers, stabilization units that are all accessible via the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
- The Promise to Call campaign urges Tennesseans to pledge to reach out before a crisis escalates.
Warning Signs of Suicide
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and SAMHSA, warning signs include:
- Talking about wanting to die, or feeling like a burden
- Extreme hopelessness, guilt, or shame
- Withdrawal from loved ones and activities
- Mood swings, rage, or increased anxiety
- Substance misuse or risky behaviors
- Sleep or appetite changes
- Giving away belongings or saying “goodbyes”
No single sign guarantees suicide risk, but multiple or worsening signs require attention.
Tennessee Crisis Resources
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 (press 0 for a Tennessee crisis counselor) or chat online.
- Tennessee Statewide Crisis Line: Call 1-855-CRISIS-1 (1-855-274-7471).
- Youth Villages Specialized Crisis Services: Call 866-791-9227 for children and youth under 18.
- Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network (TSPN): Education, training, and statewide prevention programs.
Taking Action
- If you notice these signs, talk to the person directly. Compassion and listening can make a difference.
- Encourage them to reach out to professionals or crisis services.
- Don’t leave them alone and if you feel they’re in immediate danger: call 911.
- Share Tennessee’s crisis resources widely.
